DL-Methionine is utilized as a nutritional supplement due to its equivalent physiological effects to L-type methionine, albeit at a lower cost (as L-type is derived from DL-type). The commercial methionine content exceeds 98.5% and it serves as an essential amino acid for the growth of livestock animals. It acts as a fundamental building block in protein synthesis and exerts significant regulatory influence on animal metabolism. In the feed industry, methionine is predominantly employed as a feed nutrient enhancer to rectify amino acid imbalances. It constitutes the largest proportion among all feed additives, with approximately 60% being methionine, 30% lysine, and the remaining 10% comprising other amino acids. DL-Methionine functions as a fortifier for animal feeds; its deficiency can lead to stunted growth, weight loss, impaired liver and kidney function, muscle atrophy, and deterioration of fur.
